At the 2026 AUSTAT Conference, we are very excited to be welcoming Caren Bayer back to Australia. Many of our AUSTAT members are familiar with Caren and her work. For those who have not met her before, she comes to us with a wealth of experience.
Caren Bayer was the director of Manhattan Center for the Alexander Technique, which certified Alexander teachers from 2001-2014. Caren received her certification in London from Patrick MacDonald in 1984 and has since maintained a private practice in New York City, as well as teaching workshops internationally. Most recently she has become a co-director of Riverside Initiative for the Alexander Technique, a teachers’ training program in New York. As a former dancer and longtime student of the martial arts, Caren brings 45 years of movement research to her teaching.

Post-Conference Workshop (for AUSTAT Full Teacher Members, Affiliates, and Teacher Trainees):

Day 2: Tuesday 20 October 9.00am – 5.00pm
In this three-day conference, we will explore how circular and spherical movement patterns deepen our understanding of ‘centre’. As we restore our relationship to the ground, we will learn to generate greater directional pathways and expand our spatial awareness, so that ‘where we are’ reveals ‘how we are.’ Together we will access the dimensionality that ensures strength arises from freedom—a stability and balance that naturally transfers to our students. By the end of this intensive, participants will have gained valuable tools for integrating these principles into their lives and teaching.
Full Conference Ticket price includes a light dinner on Friday night and lunch on Saturday and Sunday.
The Saturday night dinner is an extra option which we encourage all conference participants to attend. This year it will be held at the Edinburgh Castle Hotel. Have a look at their website to get a feel for this fun venue with excellent food and wine.

The Alexander Technique (AT) is a form of somatic (mind-body) training that is used world-wide by musicians. From recent research, reported benefits include a reduction in playing-related pain and excess muscle tension, as well as improvements in posture, stress levels, and performance anxiety. Players also report that instrumental technique, tonal resonance, breathing, and practice effectiveness can be positively affected.

This workshop will introduce the method Janet has developed
over decades of working with musicians to facilitate the
practical application of AT to playing and singing.
